Vegan Christmas

Advice, recipes and gift ideas for a merry vegan Christmas

Ice Cream

There are numerous brands of vegan ice cream, which are made from soya milk instead of cow’s milk. Indisputably the best ice cream available is Swedish Glace which comes in a variety of flavours and is sold in distinctive octagonal tubs. Increasingly, you will find Swedish Glace in supermarkets next to the dairy ice cream. There are many non-vegans who say that Swedish Glace is better than dairy ice cream, so you can feed it to anybody and no-one will complain.

You may also find the Tofutti brand of vegan ice cream, which is also very tasty, for sale in supermarkets.

Alternatively, if you have an ice cream maker you can easily make your own vegan ice cream. A basic recipe would involve soya cream (such as the Provamel cream alternative which is available from health food shops), soya milk, vanilla essence, sugar and arrowroot powder, which is used as a thickener.

I can recommend The Vegan Scoop, a book with scores of recipes for your ice-cream maker ranging from the plain vanilla to the more exotic: green tea, wasabi or peanut butter cucumber!

See the Kitchen Gift Guide for more information on ice cream makers.
